Therapeutic Services

Types of therapeutic services

Within our school we have a range of specialist support like occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and counseling to help address physical, communication, and emotional needs as identified on the EHCP. These services are delivered via direct support through individual or group sessions, as well as training for staff, parents, and carers to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for pupils.

Occupational Therapy (OT): Focuses on improving a child's ability to perform daily tasks. This can include support with handwriting, fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing differences, and personal care activities like eating and toileting. An Occupational Therapist may also recommend specialist equipment and adaptations to help children access the curriculum and the school environment.

Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT): Helps children develop their communication abilities, including understanding and using language. SaLTs work with pupils who have difficulties with speech, language, and social communication, and may also address eating, drinking, and swallowing issues. They often use strategies like symbols, photos, and specialized equipment. At Belvue we operate both a direct support and integrated approach for SaLT.

Mental Health and Psychological Support: This can involve one-to-one counseling, group therapy, or creative therapies like music therapy. Services like these offer a safe space for pupils to discuss their feelings. Therapeutic approaches can also aim to reduce challenging behaviours and promote positive social interactions.

How services are delivered

  • Direct support: Therapists work directly with students in individual or group sessions.

  • Training and consultation: Therapists provide training and workshops for school staff, parents, and carers to build their understanding and ability to support the child's needs.

  • Integrated approach: Services are often integrated into the school day to ensure the support is a normal part of the student's routine, with therapists collaborating with teachers and other staff.

  • Specialist and tailored support: Services are tailored to the individual needs of each child, as outlined in their education, health and care (EHC) plan, with support being reviewed and adapted over time.

Referrals and monitoring

Programmes of support are designed and developed through close partnerships between therapists and class teachers. The school leadership team works with all involved to monitor the impact that the support services have on individual students. Therapists provide updates and reports for parents and invite them to support therapy programmes at home where appropriate. Student EHCP’s are reviewed regularly to ensure that access to these services is provided where there is an identified need. In addition to this the class teacher can make an internal referral at any time for access to a specific service if they feel that one of their students requires it.
